“The first person”
the whole art piece is made out of iron. I first coated water all over its surface, and let it dry for two days. After which I found the surfaces rusted evenly. The character that this work wants to construct is a person who lives in this city and is able to speak Leizhou dialect. I selected this language because my father lived in Leizhou, but he never spoke the local dialect, which made me feel confused. What would it be like to stand on that side? So I changed the third person to the first person in the poem. A self-critical role became a subjective revelation.
“The second person”
This work is made of stainless steel, of which the surface is ignited with the firelock, causing irregular oxidation traces. The shape of the fire is based on the conversion from the first person to the second person. Turn the subjective “I” into the space between two people from the second perspective. I set this person to read this poem as a Cantonese speaker, and then I read this poem. As a Cantonese, there are many languages surrounding me. My parents’ first language is Cantonese, and I speak Mandarin at school, but when I get home, my parents speak to me in Cantonese. Actually, I often mix these two languages, but if I only speak Cantonese or Mandarin, neither of them is standard. In a sense, the root of the problem lies in me. I don’t speak Cantonese very well. Because of this, I recorded what I read to represent some roles of the People born after 2000 .In their family, so I chose this technology to present the effect through burning.
“The third person”
This is a work created in Mandarin from the second person to the third person verse. The main material of this work is stainless steel, of which the surface is marked with uneven traces with a hammer. The purpose of this work is to represent a Mandarin speaker, which is also a major aspect of my presentation to the public, and Mandarin is also my first language. I try to convert this personal pair into the second person “you” (an intimate whisper) and the third person “she” (she), “he” (he) and “it” (it), in order to judge whether the self-subject is different in emotional and structural changes.
